General Contracting Field Service Management
Cheapest Field Service Software for a One-Person Business
Compares ServiceM8's free plan against Kickserv's cheapest tier to find the lowest-cost field service software for a solo contractor.
For a one-person operation, ServiceM8’s Free plan is the cheapest option verified here: $0/mo for 1 user and 30 jobs per month. Kickserv has no free tier or single-user plan; its cheapest plan, Start, is $60/mo, sized for up to 5 users.
The two plans compared
| Vendor | Cheapest plan | Price | Users | Jobs/month | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ServiceM8 | Free | $0/mo | 1 | 30 | 10 AI uses/day, 10c per SMS |
| ServiceM8 | Starter | $29/mo | Unlimited | 50 | Free SMS, unlimited AI uses |
| Kickserv | Start | $60/mo | Up to 5 | Not capped in source | Free 30-day trial |

Both figures come from the vendors’ own pricing pages, listed above.
ServiceM8 Free: what $0/mo actually includes
ServiceM8’s Free plan is capped at 1 user and 30 jobs per month, but it is not a stripped-down trial. The pricing page lists the same “Essential Features” on Free as on every paid tier, including AI Smart Helpers, recurring jobs, deposits, partial/progress invoices, supplier invoice importing, asset management, forms and certificates, proposals, bundles, ServiceM8 Inbox, job costing and markup billing. The one running cost on Free is text messaging, billed at 10 cents per SMS; every paid ServiceM8 plan includes free texting instead.
That per-SMS charge is the only variable cost on the Free plan, so it’s worth doing the arithmetic before assuming Free is cheapest in every case:
- 50 texts/month on Free: 50 × $0.10 = $5.00/mo (still cheaper than $29/mo Starter)
- 150 texts/month on Free: 150 × $0.10 = $15.00/mo (still cheaper than Starter)
- 290 texts/month on Free: 290 × $0.10 = $29.00/mo (breakeven with Starter)
- 400 texts/month on Free: 400 × $0.10 = $40.00/mo (more expensive than Starter)
A solo contractor who texts clients heavily (arrival notices, booking confirmations, follow-ups) should count their monthly SMS volume before assuming $0/mo is the real cost.
The other hard limit on Free is job volume: 30 jobs per month. Once that’s exceeded, the next tier is Starter at $29/mo, which raises the cap to 50 jobs per month, unlimited users, and unlimited AI uses per day, and switches SMS to free. Because there’s no metered step between the two tiers, the 31st job in a month costs the same $29 as the 50th — the jump happens all at once rather than scaling gradually with volume.
Kickserv: no free tier, and pricing isn’t per user
Kickserv’s cheapest plan, Start, is $60/mo and licensed for up to 5 users. It includes an embeddable contact form, automated email and text reminders, over 20 business reports, time tracking, expense tracking, and QuickBooks Online accounting integration. There is no cheaper tier and no free plan on Kickserv’s pricing page.

Because Start is priced for a block of up to 5 users rather than per seat, a one-person business pays the full $60/mo regardless of using only 1 of the 5 available seats. Kickserv does publish a discount program called Kickserv Kickback: Start plan users who process at least $1,000/month in online payments through Kickserv get a 5% discount on their monthly fee. Applied to Start:
$60/mo × 0.95 = $57/mo
Kickserv’s pricing page also states annual billing saves 20% against the monthly rate. Applied to Start:
$60/mo × 12 = $720/year (monthly billing) $720 × 0.80 = $576/year → $48/mo equivalent (annual billing)
Even at the annual, discounted rate, Kickserv’s cheapest plan ($48/mo effective) costs more than ServiceM8 Starter ($29/mo) and far more than ServiceM8 Free ($0/mo), for a solo user staying under 30 jobs a month.
Cost at 1, 3, 5 and 8 users
ServiceM8 prices by job volume, not headcount, once you’re past the Free plan. Kickserv prices by user-block. That produces different scaling curves:
| Users | ServiceM8 (cheapest fitting plan) | Kickserv (cheapest fitting plan) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Free, $0/mo (≤30 jobs/mo) | Start, $60/mo |
| 3 | Starter, $29/mo (Free caps at 1 user) | Start, $60/mo |
| 5 | Starter, $29/mo | Start, $60/mo (exactly at its 5-user cap) |
| 8 | Starter, $29/mo | Run, $119/mo (Start’s 5-user cap is exceeded) |
Two things stand out. First, ServiceM8’s Free plan only works for a true one-person shop, since it hard-caps at 1 user; adding a second person forces an upgrade to Starter at $29/mo, which then covers unlimited users. Second, Kickserv’s per-block pricing means a business growing from 5 to 8 users jumps from $60/mo straight to $119/mo (the Run plan, which covers up to 10 users and adds dispatch mapping, GPS check-ins, custom data fields, custom reports, and QuickBooks Desktop integration for an additional $50/month).
Annual totals: what each plan costs over a year
Extending the monthly figures above to a full year, using the vendors’ own numbers and stated discount rules:

| Plan | Monthly billing × 12 | Annual billing (where a discount is published) |
|---|---|---|
| ServiceM8 Free | $0/mo × 12 = $0/year | Not applicable — plan is already $0 |
| ServiceM8 Starter | $29/mo × 12 = $348/year | No annual discount published on ServiceM8’s pricing page |
| Kickserv Start | $60/mo × 12 = $720/year | $720 × 0.80 = $576/year ($48/mo equivalent) |
| Kickserv Run | $119/mo × 12 = $1,428/year | $1,428 × 0.80 = $1,142.40/year ($95.20/mo equivalent) |
Two gaps in the comparison are worth naming directly. ServiceM8’s pricing page does not publish an annual-billing discount the way Kickserv’s does, so there’s no equivalent way to shave the $348/year Starter cost down further based on the cited source. And because ServiceM8 ties price to job volume while Kickserv ties price to user-block size, the two vendors’ cost curves respond to different kinds of growth: a ServiceM8 customer’s bill only rises when jobs cross a threshold (30, then 50 per month), while a Kickserv customer’s bill only rises when headcount crosses a threshold (5, then 10 users) — a business could do far more jobs per month on Kickserv’s Start plan without paying more, but would pay the full $60/mo (or $719/year average) even if it only ever ran 5 jobs total.
What could not be verified
No vendors were excluded from this comparison; both ServiceM8 and Kickserv publish clear pricing on their sites, listed above. Two things worth flagging inside what was published:
- Kickserv’s Start plan page does not state a jobs-per-month cap, unlike ServiceM8, so job-volume limits on Kickserv’s Start plan are not confirmed here.
- Kickserv’s QuickBooks Desktop integration is listed as a $50/month add-on on the Run plan specifically; whether this add-on is available or priced the same on Start was not stated on the page.
If either of these details affects your decision, confirm directly with the vendor before signing up.
What to check before buying
- Job volume, not just user count. ServiceM8 Free caps at 30 jobs/month; exceeding it forces an upgrade to the $29/mo Starter tier even if you’re still a one-person operation.
- SMS habits. ServiceM8 Free charges 10 cents per text; run your own monthly text count through the arithmetic above before assuming $0/mo is your real cost.
- Whether pricing is per-user or per-block. Kickserv’s Start plan bills $60/mo for a block of up to 5 users regardless of how many you actually use; ServiceM8’s Starter plan and above are unlimited-user at a flat monthly rate.
- Add-on integrations. Kickserv’s QuickBooks Desktop sync adds $50/month on the Run plan; confirm this cost before assuming your accounting integration is included.
- Discount eligibility. Kickserv’s 5% Kickback discount requires processing a minimum monthly payment volume ($1,000/month on Start) through the platform; confirm you’ll actually hit that threshold before counting on the discount.
- Billing cadence. Kickserv’s published 20% annual-billing discount only pays off if cash flow allows a lump-sum annual payment; ServiceM8 doesn’t publish an equivalent annual discount on its pricing page, so there’s no matching incentive to prepay a year at once.

Common questions
- What's the cheapest field service software for a one-person business?
- ServiceM8's Free plan costs $0/mo for 1 user and covers 30 jobs per month, 10 AI uses per day, and core features like scheduling, quoting, invoicing and mobile access. Kickserv has no free tier or single-user plan; its cheapest plan, Start, is $60/mo and is sized for up to 5 users, so a solo operator pays for capacity they won't use. If job volume climbs past 30 per month, the next ServiceM8 tier, Starter, is $29/mo, which at its 50-job cap works out to about $0.58 per job ($29 ÷ 50) — still well under Kickserv's $60/mo regardless of job count.
- Does ServiceM8's free plan really cost nothing?
- The listed price is $0/mo, but it caps at 1 user, 30 jobs per month and 10 AI uses per day. Text messages cost 10 cents per SMS on the Free plan, while every paid ServiceM8 plan includes free texting. The breakeven point against the $29/mo Starter plan is exactly $29 ÷ $0.10 = 290 texts per month: below 290 texts, Free plus per-text charges costs less than Starter's flat fee; at or above 290 texts, Starter is cheaper or equal. A solo contractor sending under roughly 290 texts a month still pays less overall on Free than on Starter, based on the per-SMS rate published.
- When does a solo contractor need to upgrade from ServiceM8 Free?
- Upgrade is needed once monthly job volume exceeds 30, since Free caps there. The next tier, Starter, is $29/mo, covers unlimited users and 50 jobs per month, and switches text messaging to free. There's no partial upgrade path; once jobs exceed 30 per month, Starter is the next available step. That's a jump from $0/year to at least $348/year ($29 × 12, with no annual discount published for ServiceM8) triggered by as little as one job over the 30-job cap in a single month.
- Why doesn't Kickserv offer a plan for a single user?
- Kickserv's cheapest published plan, Start, is priced at $60/mo and licensed for up to 5 users rather than per seat. There is no lower tier or free plan on Kickserv's pricing page, so a one-person shop pays the same $60/mo as a 5-person crew unless it qualifies for the Kickserv Kickback discount. Spread across 5 users, Start works out to $12/mo per seat ($60 ÷ 5); a solo operator using only 1 of those 5 seats is effectively paying $60 per seat used, five times the per-seat cost of a fully staffed team on the same plan.
